Should Pet Owners Clean Their Ducts Before Winter?
By Air Pro UT · Last updated: October 26, 2026
Yes. If you have pets, early fall, before you run the furnace daily, is a good time to have your ducts cleaned. Hair and dander settle in return ducts over the summer, and in a Utah winter the furnace recirculates the same indoor air for months. Cleaning first means less buildup moving through the house all winter.

How does pet dander get into air ducts?
Return vents pull room air back to the furnace, and that air carries pet hair and dander with it. The filter catches some of it. The rest settles on the return grilles, inside the return ducts, and around the blower. Over a summer of shedding, that layer builds up where you cannot see it.
Returns near where pets sleep or play usually collect the most. Floor returns pick up hair that drifts along the carpet. Once the heat starts running, the blower moves that air through the whole house again, which is why the timing of a cleaning matters for pet owners.
Why does it matter more in a Utah winter?
Utah homes close up for winter. Windows stay shut, the furnace runs for long stretches, and inversion season along the Wasatch Front makes people even less likely to air the house out. The same indoor air, and whatever is in the ducts, keeps cycling through the system from late fall into early spring.
That is a recirculation point, not a medical finding. A pet household simply has more hair and dander in that loop. Cleaning the ducts before the season starts removes what settled over the summer, so the furnace is not pushing it around for months.
When is the best time to clean ducts if you have pets?
Air Pro UT recommends September through November for Salt Lake City pet owners, before heavy furnace use and before inversion season sets in. Other good times are after a heavy shedding season, after a new pet joins the household, or when you move into a home where the last owners had pets.
That timing is our recommendation for Utah homes. It is not a rule from a health agency, and a dirty system can be cleaned in any month. If you already see hair at the registers in December, book then. Basic duct cleaning is $199 through December 15, 2026, for up to 8 vents, with a free standard dryer vent.
What are signs pet hair is building up in your ducts?
Look for pet hair stuck to register and return grilles, dust that comes back on furniture within days, a furnace filter that clogs quickly, or a stale pet odor when the blower starts. Any one of these is a reason to have the ducts checked. The technician confirms what is actually inside.
- Hair at the registers. Clumps on the grilles usually mean more inside the return.
- Dust returns fast. Surfaces need wiping again a few days after cleaning.
- Filters clog quickly. A filter that turns gray and matted well before its change date.
- Odor. A pet smell that gets stronger when the system kicks on.
Can duct cleaning help with pet allergies?
Duct cleaning may help reduce dust and dander that has built up in the ducts. It is not a medical treatment. The U.S. EPA says duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems, and pets keep shedding into the room air. Air Pro UT does not treat allergies or promise allergy relief.
If someone in the home has allergies or asthma, talk with a doctor about care. Think of duct cleaning as removing debris from one part of the house, alongside filters, vacuuming, and the other habits below.
What else helps between cleanings?
With pets, change the furnace filter more often than the package suggests, especially in winter. Brush and groom pets regularly, vacuum floors and furniture often, and keep registers and returns clear of beds and blankets so air can move. These are general habits, not a replacement for cleaning a loaded system.
- Check the filter monthly during heavy furnace use and replace it when it looks dirty.
- Groom pets outside or away from return vents when you can.
- Vacuum near returns, where hair tends to drift.
- Wipe register grilles when you dust.
What does Air Pro UT’s duct cleaning include?
Every Air Pro UT duct cleaning uses a negative air vacuum so hair, dander, and dust are pulled into the collection equipment instead of into your rooms. The technician cleans the supply and return runs and the registers, then checks airflow before leaving. The vent count is confirmed in writing first.
